Preserve The Coral Reef

South Florida Symphony’s music education program, Symphony in the Schools, educates and introduces underserved children to classical music through thematic content such as Preserve The Coral Reef. Since its inception in 1998, the program has served over 65,000 students, and currently includes Tracy Mourning’s Overtown Youth Center; Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe County Public Schools; Bridge Prep Academy at Temple Israel of Greater Miami; and many more.

The mission of South Florida Symphony is to delight, inspire, and educate the communities we serve through music.

Freedom From Violence

For over 25 years, The Women’s Fund Miami-Dade has supported over 500 programs serving almost 100,000 women and girls, and provided more than $4 million of funding. The Women’s Fund Miami-Dade works with community partners to overcome all forms of violence against women and girls, and is the lead partner for The Official Stop Sex Trafficking Campaign of The Miami Super Bowl Host Committee.

The mission of The Women’s Fund Miami-Dade is to create change for women and girls through advocacy, investment, and impact in four pillars of: Freedom From Violence, Economic Mobility, Leadership, and Health and Well-Being.

South Florida Symphony and The Women’s Fund Miami-Dade join forces to honor Lara St. John as an inspiration through her journey gaining freedom from the sexual violence she experienced at the hands of her teacher. Lara’s bravery in giving voice to her story helps others to gain freedom, become forces of nature, and reach their dreams.

Proceeds from Inspirations will benefit lead presenter, The South Florida Symphony; and supporting presenter, The Women’s Fund Miami-Dade.

World-Renowned Violinist

Lara St. John

Canadian-born Lara St. John, has been described as “something of a phenomenon” by The Strad, and as a “high-powered soloist” by The New York Times.

“As a classical violinist, Lara St. John has cut a fearless path from child prodigy to international fame. She has performed with some of the world’s greatest orchestras, founded her own record label, and challenged the norms for female soloists in the traditionally buttoned-up genre.” — Philadelphia Inquirer, July 2019

Lara St. John is a musical maverick, an advocate for victims’ rights, and a survivor of sexual assault. Overcoming her personal tragedy that left her with an unknown future, the acclaimed violinist recently disclosed that she was sexually assaulted by her renowned teacher at the Curtis Institute, and then disregarded when she reported it. Lara has owned her own label, Ancalagon, since 1999, through which she has released albums that range from classical, to new commissions, to folk music, and more. Lara has performed as a soloist with the orchestras of Cleveland, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and with the Boston Pops, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (London), among many others.

The Symphonic Experience

The South Florida Symphony, founded by Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso

On the edges of your senses, you are elevated to a state of visceral and powerful awakening. We are moved to a place of oneness – with each other, with nature – to one common humanity, with unlimited possibility.

On stage, fourteen powerful women become one, and the distance between the ensemble and the audience dissolves into a harmony of movement as bodies sway, bows caress strings, and the setting is transformed into an immersive, sensual, and hypnotic state of higher being.

“You have to experience the symphony with a certain amount of intellect. It’s complicated. It’s deep. It’s virtuosic. There is no other music written in this way. It becomes part of your bloodstream, part of you, and grows with you.  It’s an expression—passionate but gentle, a physical and emotional reaction, and a physical motion. It’s sexy as hell!” Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso, Music Director, South Florida Symphony.

Lara St. John’s unique interpretation of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons comes alive with color, texture, dynamism and pure power. It is a contrast of sound and silence, movement and stillness. It is an immersion of oneself – engulfing, absorbing, tantalizing – as you become the power of the music and the force of nature.

Live Auction of a Custom-Created Inspirations Artwork

An original work by Mark Phi will be auctioned at the event.

Mark Phi is a creator with an ideology rooted in the belief that we all have the ability to create change and make an impact on our world.

Mark Phi demonstrates this ideology by using his fine art paintings and other art forms to help charitable organizations access financial resources and spread awareness about their cause.

“Phi”, is the 21st letter of the Greek alphabet. It is also the symbol that represents the divine quotient, golden ratio or The Creator of the universe’s mathematical representation in nature. For the artist it represents the universal innate ability within all of us… the ability to “Create” and leave a “Mark” behind… just like The Creator. That is Mark Phi. Create Impact.
